MRSA infection in person who does not have any recent
healthcare exposures such as:
- Hospitalizations
- Surgeries
- Permanent intravenous lines
- Receiving renal dialysis
- Living in a long term care facility
CA-MRSA strains are:
- 9% of MRSA in Baltimore, Maryland
- 12% of MRSA in Minnesota
- 20% of MRSA in Georgia
- 30% of MRSA in Hawaii
- Disproportionately reported among children
CA-MRSA transmission factors
- Crowding
- Frequent contact
- Compromised skin
- Contaminated surfaces and shared items
- Lack of cleanliness
North Carolina MRSA Surveillance
- Sentinel site surveillance in 11 hospitals
- Non-traditional surveillance through anti-biograms
Populations at risk for CA-MRSA
- Sports participants: football players, wrestlers, fencers
- Correctional facility inmates
- Military recruits
- Men who have sex with men
- Injection drug users
- Children
